<![CDATA[Graff ORM - Blog]]>Sat, 25 May 2013 03:15:59 -0800Weebly<![CDATA[Piracy - Why does Google make it so easy to steal music?]]>Mon, 11 Mar 2013 18:21:09 GMThttp://www.grafform.com/1/post/2013/03/piracy-why-does-google-make-it-so-easy-to-steal-music.htmlI remember reading a report commissioned by UK Music, "Music Experience and Behaviour in Young People" carried out by the university of Hertfordshire in 2009. Back then the average digital collection was 8,000 tracks amongst the one thousand eight hundred 18-24 year respondents, with on average 1,800 tracks in their pocket on an MP3 player.

What amazed me... was the majority of this "pirated" music had been "stripped" from YouTube. I was a little green, as I'd never heard of this before and assumed it would be tricky to do. But when I discussed this with others it seemed this practice was common place and indeed easy to do.

I was reminded of this report today when I typed "Y" into Google and the 4th predictive suggested result was "youtube converter".

But it gets worse, when I typed "Yo" into Google and "youtube converter" jumps up to the 2nd predictive answer. By the time you get to typing "yout" the predictive text is suggesting "youtube converter" in 2nd and "youtube downloader' in third place.

It isn't all negative they are prepared to pay for digital music

85% of P2P downloaders would be interested in paying for an unlimited, all-you-can-eat MP3 download service. 57% of these said such a service would stop them using unlicensed P2P services, and 77% that they would still continue to buy CDs.

There is a lot of innovation going on in the mobile industry, with people looking to tap into peoples love of Music. Hopefully they will find a way for musicians to monetise their content.

<![CDATA[5 Reasons Why It Pays to Sell on Facebook]]>Wed, 12 Dec 2012 10:24:36 GMThttp://www.grafform.com/1/post/2012/12/5-reasons-why-it-pays-to-sell-on-facebook.html
Guest blog by Jenny @soldsie
I first heard about Soldsie back in September via techcrunch I thought being able to buy a product by writing "sold" in the comments under a Facebook picture sounded like an amazing idea. If they can make the transactional section of a sale on Facebook easy, i think small businesses will love it. So much so that I found myself telling my friends about it over dinner that night and several businesses since.

So when Jenny Xie at Soldsie wrote asking if I accept guest blogs and if she could contribute one on F-commerce? I excitedly said yes and so without further ado, here is my first ever guest blog by Jenny @soldsie

In the words of one curly-haired crooner, the times—they are a-changin’. Mashable recently published an infographic announcing that by 2015, social commerce sales will make up 50% of all online purchases. That’s huge! The recent shopping flurry around Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday had social media experts analyzing traffic from Facebook to brand webpages, but less scrutiny was placed on Facebook storefronts themselves. We think that’s an unfortunate oversight.

Despite lots of hubbub around F-commerce, such as this study on Facebook fan-economics by Social Commerce Today, businesses are still largely struggling to monetize their Facebook fan base. The transition to selling on Facebook may seem foreign, but with social commerce growing in prominence, it’s crucial to cash in now—here’s why.

Take Advantage of the Mobile Facebook User

Mark Zuckerberg announced at a TechCrunch Disrupt SF conference that mobile users are “more than twice as likely to use Facebook more than 6 or 7 times per week.” In light of these metrics, Facebook is aggressively optimizing its site for mobile users, which bodes well for companies selling on Facebook. App users who check their phones during mealtimes, daily commutes, between appointments, etc. are exposed to Facebook sales and Page status updates, whereas they’re much less likely to pull out a laptop during those crucial windows of time. Company brand Pages that maintain a strong Facebook presence become integrated into their fans’ social experiences and are positioned to benefit from impulse buys.

Sell Smart; Sell Social

Facebook supports a seamless integration of sales and marketing forces. With the Soldsie platform, retailers post products to their brand Pages, and fans purchase by commenting “sold.” It’s a sales channel that doubles as a marketing tool, since Likes, Comments, and Shares get pulled onto the fan’s News Feed and broadcast through their social network. Customers are automatically invoiced and don’t have to interrupt their Facebook experience as they shop. Alternately, other Facebook commerce apps like Payvment and BigCommerce introduce a shopping cart to your Page that links to a separate storefront for merchandise. In all cases, small business owners now have the horsepower to compete with huge brands by selling socially.

Make Shopping A Sport

Selling on Facebook, and selling through Facebook comments in particular, have an irresistible aura of newness and excitement. Successful merchants like Accessory Auctions host biweekly sales that gather over 32,000 fans onto the Page to comment “sold” in an effort to “win” the jewelry before quantities run out. The sales event generates lots of buzz for the Page, draws in new customers, and allows existing fans to be more active than if they were just browsing a webpage.

Create Conversations Around User-Generated Content

Facebook is prime real estate for fan interaction—arguably more so than any brick-and-mortar location. One in 3 small businesses manage Facebook Pages and maintain fan relationships by posting updates, offering exclusive deals, and hosting contests. With co-creation of content becoming a more integral part of marketing campaigns, businesses are taking advantage of the forum that Facebook provides for customer reviews, contest entries, and feedback. The effort doesn’t go to waste, either: 36% of users promote brand content on their Timelines, and 20% of consumers would rather purchase through Facebook than a company’s website.

Build a Brand Personality - But Don’t Be a “Condescending Corporate Brand Page”!

That said, it’s important to remember that Facebook remains a place for brands to be genuine. The tongue-in-cheek Condescending Corporate Brand Page pokes fun of thinly-veiled attempts to gain Likes without offering compelling content. Get Satisfaction and Column Five created an infographic that reveals how 38% of users unlike Facebook Pages with boring or repetitive updates. Posting exclusive sales on Facebook stays true to the merchant’s agenda and provides real value to fans.

The Bottom Line

Selling on Facebook and selling through comments are robust ways to reign the power of social media to your company. Not only will your Facebook Page gain exposure, but it will also reward fans with opportunities to buy great products and strengthen that consumer bond.

<![CDATA[What is Klout all about?]]>Mon, 21 May 2012 14:22:51 GMThttp://www.grafform.com/1/post/2012/05/what-is-klout-all-about.htmlDo you want to talk to everyone or jump to the front of the queue and go straight to the influencers? You know, the people who already have a big reach with an interested and engaged audience. It appears to be the new holy grail for Marketers, Sales people, Politicians, Brands and many more.

There are a few companies who "measure influence". The one I've heard of and used the most is Klout, but mainly due to it being bundled in with Hootsuite (Which I adore and use daily). Plus they have the old "Whats in it for me" issue worked out with giving Klout Perks to people with high Klout scores. Although my "Klout Perks" have politely been worth the square route of nothing so far!

I fall in and out of love with using Klout, currently out! They changed an algorithm and lots of peoples scores crash. Adding multiple social networks doesn't seem to make a jot of difference! I also don't like that that they don't measure blogs or LinkedIn Groups etc. But maybe the biggest reason is, I recently went on holiday, unplugged for a week and my Klout score just dropped through the floor.

“So what?” you’re thinking. “I don’t have an account, so I’m not on the radar, right?” Wrong. If you have a Twitter or Facebook account, you have a Klout score and anyone with a Klout account can look it up. (Which is quoted from here.)

A few brands are using Klout in campaigns... I read of one campaign around a fashion week (I think in the states), where the agency ran a competition to allow people with influence (High Klout) a ticket to a free glitzy party. They picked a good sounding/high number like 60 or 70 but Klout actually had to explain that such a few people attain that high a number and gently persuaded them that 40 was actually a very good! It did push people with lower scores to start engaging (gaming the system) to increase their scores to grab a free ticket.

Or here's a discount with Gilt based on Klout Score http://blog.compete.com/2012/03/13/gilt-looks-to-score-sales-from-klout-promotion/

Klout is just one of many influence measuring sites that you can log in with facebook or twitter. There is Kred, PeerIndex and I'm sure others. They are really easy to set up (Just log in with twitter or Facebook) as shown here with mine. http://kred.com/danieldoherty which seems to give points for every interaction so goes into more detail. Plus I have met their CEO Andrew Grill who is a thoroughly nice guy.
http://www.peerindex.com/danieldoherty I have listened to some one pitching Peerindex too.

Once people realise not to take all this too seriously they will really enjoy Klouchebag -

Klouchebag measures how much of an asshat you are on Twitter.

Seriously if people start to annoy you with Klout invite send them to Klouchebag, I think it's genius!

So these thoughts came because I saw this tweet by ‏@BrennerMichael The Clout of Klout http://goo.gl/b4Sda via @candacemountain

I.E. blog http://blog.candacemountain.com/?p=380 and I felt I had to reply. Which probably proves this lady Laura was right when she tweeted this (to me last week)...

@tentontroll486/4486/4486/4 Isn't this Klout obsession a bit OTT? RT @danieldoherty: How to Cheat at Klout via Social Media Today at me last week.

I have to give Kred some Kred.

I have to give credit where it's due. This started of as a reply to a blog about Klout, but after watching this video and signing upto Kred (For this post) I am really starting to like Kred and I love the widgets they offer (there are lots) I just used the biggest one I could find below.
I just downloaded the chrome browser so I'll see how that does, plus noticed they take into account blogs, linkedIn group and can add offline achievements to your profile too. I will be playing with Kred more now I've gone off Klout. Now if I could just integrate with @Hootsuite Andrew I'd be delighted.

All the best, @Daniel838/6 Doherty

HootSuite - Social Media Dashboard
Just watching a video of @Hootsuite founder Ryan Holmes being interviewed by MediaCom – Social Media Technology Thought Leader Interview Series

Next for Hootsuite, 3 million users at end of 2011 just approaching 6 million users, Hootsuite handles 1.5 million messages that can reach 1.5 billion people a day and they are just approaching their 1 billionth message video here. Messages via Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn, Wordpress, TumblR, (Google+
on enterprise at the moment but with 5,500+ requests for this feature I think we're all hoping it won't be long!) and looking to expand this list more.

Working on teams and improving analytics. Pinterest seems like a smart move.

I should have guessed that the Hootbus was influenced by Burningman. I've been 4 times before video's here and get some Hussle from Burningman inspiration. You have to be a swiss knife of a person, hussle hussle @GaryVee would love this. Just reading the Lean Start up now and met Eric Ries a few weeks ago.

If you have a question about Hootsuite please ask. If I don't know I will just ask Chris my Hootsuite Account Manager.

<![CDATA[Google+ and You - Why your brand needs to care]]>Thu, 22 Mar 2012 23:22:35 GMThttp://www.grafform.com/1/post/2012/03/googleplus.html
A google+ post I wrote here I need to start blogging here.
Or why should you do the “Google Dance*”? By Daniel +GraffORM

Google+ expertly explained in images https://plus.google.com/u/0/105103058358743760661/posts/2Rtitgg6uCs by +Gideon Rosenblatt

Question, How much of your website traffic comes from Google search?

(That’s before you even think about YouTube or advertising with Google.)

The percentage of your web traffic sent directly to your website from Google is why your business needs to care about @Google+ and those little +1 buttons you are starting to see around the web.

If you harness these services it will help more eye balls discover your brand and could lead to much, much more. Ignore+Google at your peril. I know there are other search engines, but look at your analytics and tell me if it’s significant in comparison to the numbers?

Google is already returning much more “personalised” search results for people logged in. Our search results are no longer the same and the adverts we are served up are increasingly just for us. Google is only just starting to join up the dots that make up our life on the web and while we are walking around the real world.

#SoMoLo Social Mobile and Location are all key future areas for Google.

Google + Social

I read a +Social Media Examiner article http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/6-google-tips-for-businesses I added some limited comments but it also started me thinking about G+ & Google in general.

I think the article is a good overview but for me it missed some vital things. (But I was spoiled by…)

The Ultimate G+ tutorial by +Gabriel Vasile has been invaluable to mehttps://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/106393478695568433143/albums/5674897950683309537 and is my go to G+ reference book.

Images are also great, Google like humans rank them highly.

The Scrap book images at the top of your and your brands profile are an excellent way to stand out (if you are creative), I had help with my +GraffORM images form +First Presence https://plus.google.com/u/0/105886423031318391387/aboutthanks +dave roberts Have also used GraffORM images he prepared for me in this too.

Google+ Hangouts are going to be fantastic way to engage and also help businesses solve customer’s problems. Last week at #SMWgoogle I also learned (via +Beth Foster I think at the event) that you can share your screen during a hangout, so if a customer has a problem they can show you. You can solve it and as you can easily record Hangouts on YouTube and share http://google-plus.com/3587/google-hangouts-on-air-a-live-broadcast-feature-with-recording-to-youtube-launched-for-some-users to avoid that problem in future.

That’s before you look at cooler cutting edge use of a Hangout like where +will.i.am of the @blackeyedpeas shared a unique moment at a concert with a few lucky people via a hangout and then 60,000 people in New York Black Eyed Peas hanging out on Google+

I know friends of Mine +matty peacock of http://listn.to/KidsUnique
+ the talented +Izzy Lawrence of www.izzyfied.com will be looking at this alongside the cool stuff @hangoutparty crowd are doing.

Also use Google+ Ripples to connect with influencers great article via wonderful +SEOmozhttp://www.seomoz.org/blog/using-google-plus-ripples-to-connect-with-influencers

G+ is going to knit together Google’s suite of products, which don’t forget include

+Gmail +Google Search +Google Analytics Training & Support (Enterprise software for FREE +YouTube (8 Years of video uploaded every day #SMWgoogle ) Don’t under estimate YouTube read http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/8-ways-to-maximize-your-youtube-marketing-results @Googlecalendar +Google Maps (Location &Search etc) +Google Docs @G++G+ Business Pages Directory (For Social) and +Android (Mobile and so much more).

I have put every brand and person I mention in this post is this Circle that I can share with you. Which is just another G+ trick https://plus.google.com/b/105886423031318391387/102252999925332664248/posts/Rqfp8XDzFbn

I think it is really significant that Google has just announced they were “simplifying their privacy policy”.http://www.google.com/policies/

They are removing barriers to share info between their services (For us, but worth noting this also applies to Google as well! See concerns mentioned in +huffington post last week http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/08/epic-ftc-google-privacy_n_1263844.html).

Also @Google Places which I follow with interest that I discovered via +Sarah Drinkwater (good luck) which will be another layer over Google maps.

Don’t forget Search…It’s interesting to note that if you do a Google Search via a browser now, Search has segmented your results into the following categories.

Everything, Images, Maps, news, videos, shopping, books, places, blogs, discussions, applications, Patents.

Then you can pick your location to get better results bearing in mind location (obviously on Android they will already know your location, time of day, your friends, your schedule & more…)

Mix in the future of mobile and the fact “Your Next desktop could be your phone” is already/becoming a reality but with+Android and +Ubuntu knitting this all together http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/android it could become seamlessly blended within all these products.

A glimpse of the Google future (along with my favourite quote from Le Web in December 2011 thanks +Loic Le Meur ) from Google Chairman +Eric Schmidt (at 30:16) that the "role of government was to make sure that citizens have access to inexpensive fixed and wireless broadband." This was in the context of what Governments can due to spur job growth LeWeb 2011 Eric Schmidt & Loic Le Meur

Other highlights include him mentioning Google being baked into TV’s is just around the corner and also how great Ice Cream Sandwich is! I can’t wait (Wish +OrangeUK would get the +SAMSUNG NEXSUS rather that stick to the Note!)

2 real world examples of how important Google is to website traffic. (Clients I have advised, that I may do more detailed report on in the future)

www.BuddyGreco.co.uk - Buddy Greco is 85, used to sing with the original Rat Pack, has released 70 albums, over 100 singles, performed at some of the best music venues around the world, Sang “The lady is a Tramp” and also the theme tune to the current show Pan Am on the BBC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddy_Greco).

Out of 10,000+ hits in a 7 month period

He has profiles on Social Networks that are irregularly updated. Social traffic includes Twitter 5 people, MySpace 4 & Bing only 4 people. With Facebook better at 81 people and the BBC at only 118.

So total 212 people from all these sites combined. Wikipedia with 671 sent 3x this on its own!
77% came from Google search with just over 8000 visits.

This includes a huge spike on January 1st 2012, As on New Year's Eve 2011 Buddy made a guest appearance on Jools Hollands 'Hootenanny' singing Fly Me To The Moon backed by the Jools Holland Rhythm & Blues Orchestra.

From which 1678 people came to the website from Googling “Buddy Greco” and 178 people came via Wikipedia all on one day the 1st January 2012. So just under 20% of his 7 month traffic came in one day via 2 online sources after 1 TV appearance.
But we only know this as we put Google analytics in the website, without which we would have no chance to measure what works.

The second website www.FanniesRule.com with more traffic (although data over a slightly longer period of time), whose founder +Sarah Berry (Who also helped edit this post x, errors are ALL mine) is very active on her personal Facebook profile and is great at driving traffic to her site with updates/events/image and posting blog posts to Facebook that direct back to her website. As well as using word of mouth, events listings, she is great at getting mentioned in the press and other peoples blogs.

+Fannies Rule web traffic was
18% from Facebook with a further
25% coming directly to the website because of strong brand awareness and marketing.
31% traffic from Google in a tough market (Fannie Mae and Fannie as a word itself)
26% remaining hits coming from 200+ other referral sites.

If you are still not convinced why you should pay attention to Google+ check out this (Again from the SEO experts+SEOmoz explaining why you should in this great video http://www.seomoz.org/blog/why-every-marketer-now-needs-a-google-strategy

Also Read Googles financial details here http://investor.google.com/financial/tables.html they are growing at a phenomenal rate.
"Google had a really strong quarter ending a great year. Full year revenue was up 29%, and our quarterly revenue blew past the $10 billion mark for the first time,” said Larry Page, CEO of Google. “I am super excited about the growth of Android, Gmail, and Google+, which now has 90 million users globally – well over double what I announced just three months ago. By building a meaningful relationship with our users through Google+ we will create amazing experiences across our services. I’m very excited about what we can do in 2012 – there are tremendous opportunities to help users and grow our business.”http://investor.google.com/earnings/2011/Q4_google_earnings.html

Please let me know your thoughts below. I would be very grateful for any shares, +1’s or circles that you see as appropriate for my 1st big G+ post.

Google and Google+ are here to stay, so you may as well have fun guys.

All the best,

@DanielDoherty

If you know someone new to Social Media I put together this short crash course to help people just starting outhttp://www.grafform.com/explain.html I’d be delighted if you shared. The videos are mainly by the talented @commoncraft and I utilise the crowd sourced wisdom of +Wikipedia too. I want to ensure people understand the key ideas so they save time and don’t get just swept along in the social media frenzy. Always ask what are the benefits and is it going to be beneficial and appropriate for me?

• I first heard the term “Google Dance” from the talented http://www.linkedin.com/in/rogerjones28 my very unofficial (he doesn’t know) mentor
• Image used is from here http://www.google.com/policies/

Thanks to +Andrew Scott +Sarah Berry for encouraging me to write posts, +Sukie Kang for whom Google+ was his first Social Network (and he beat me here), so I figured there might be something in it! Also my friend +stuart griffith whose technical mind and project management skills I find a hugely beneficial resource. Along with +matty peacock and all the others who keep introducing me to great people and interesting projects.

<![CDATA[Social Media and my first blog back in April 2010]]>Mon, 26 Apr 2010 00:01:01 GMThttp://www.grafform.com/1/post/2010/04/social-media-and-my-first-blog-back-in-april-2010.html
I have been blogging sporadically at my personal site, but here is my very first blog and yes it was about Social Media, so here is a step back two years in time before Facebook bought Gowalla or Google+ existed...
So I signed upto @GaryVee email newsletter Which mentioned this article about the potential of Geo Location technology within social media being used for business.

I had to comment as I find it so interesting, which you can read here. Then I spotted this article via twitter which ended with the comments,

"Whether it’s Foursquare or Gowalla or Facebook or Google or Apple’s app portfolio taking the lead in social shopping, one thing is for sure: the infrastructure is in place and the people are ready to participate, showing social shopping has arrived.)

So my plan was to just stick the link for each article, on the opposite page to link them both together so people would see both.

But then I started writing and the next thing I knew it was gone 5am on a Saturday morning.

So If you’d like to see my very non techie, social media feelings wrapped up with trends/directions across a few sectors/businesses or objectives feel free to read on : )

(Apologies for things I don’t get/understand…… but I will ask, investigate & figure things out along the way, this is the journey not the destination)

The idea of Geo location hasn’t even registered for most small & medium size businesses, lets face it only a small percentage are even registering social media may have a role in business.

I went to a recent Business link training course on web optimization (&help getting what your business needs from a web designer etc) in London http://ow.ly/1CsoK where to a packed house of small business owners (100+)

Here’s my caveat (spot my background in propertyhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caveat_emptor)

It was a fantastic course & I would defineteIy recommend it but here goes…….. am about to pick on 2 statements with no context from a full day couse….

But he the guy running it said……….

A Small business needed to spend a minimum of £1700 to get a decent website

and

B) He doesn’t know how/any business who/is making money with twitter.

I took umberidge with both statements

A) Can be a lot cheaper (FREE WEBSITE) or a lot more & to just stick a figure in a hungry room is just going to lead to over charged/not doing all it should because in essence it is a flat fee a flat fee.

(but I was in the small percentile disagreeing with him) and he will be doing that course over and over again. See here if you need clarification that neither is true.

I definitely think people are starting to wake up to the potential of social media and that combined with geo location technology is going to be a great tool for some businesses.

The whole point of search and why Google have done so well is when they gave the answers, the person moves one step closer to the main objective of a site (to be found) and takes people one step away from the till/cash register.

Imagine when the person is passing a till and you can just send/call them in (not just existing customers but new ones too)!!

But we are certainly not as far down the line as this.....

"one thing is for sure: the infrastructure is in place and the people are ready to participate, showing social shopping has arrived."

Which is a bit strong even in the States who are streets ahead of us (Europe)

If you want to see what the British Government are Evangelising check out my next post

I think the some businesses in the UK (any way) are only just catching up to this whole idea of social media, let alone having the infrastructure in place for it to be common place. & as gbbo.org in my next post shows the british government are still trying to encourage many on line!

I would guess at the start of the year at larger companies there were conversations going on at board room level with people asking what twitter is?

With some people who are switched on to the benefit of social media thinking what strategy shall we use with social media. While the people who get it are trying to figure out clever ways to “engage” their customers or more importantly their community of potential customers. If you laugh you don’t get it yet.

Football takes Baby steps with FourSquare too : )

http://www.mobile-ent.biz/news/37022/Man-City-v-Spurs-Foursquare-promotion-a-damp-squib?m=posted#comments

I know there will now be a load of case studies quotes after this post saying here’s an example of social media at work. I say brilliant that’s because it does and I look forward to reading them.

Feel free to let me know your thoughts below or at my LinkedIn group
